Record Announcement-
A psychedelic parable inspired by a typographical error. The suicide of a friend. The
awkward outburst that read like black comedy at his funeral. An uptick of exposed sex
offenders. The fiery death and slow rebirth of a Detroit landmark. These ideas and more,
color the dark sarcasm of Black Wings, the newest offering from Jaye Thomas and Lisa
Poszywak, of Detroit post-punk duo, Rogue Satellites. Coming off of their longest break
between releases to date, they have crafted a very personal album that reflects on dark and
trying times.
In 2016, Thomas (guitar, vocals, programming), lost his lifelong friend, Matt, to suicide,
inspiring the heartfelt synth ballad, “Palest Blue.” Thomas is somewhat known for crossing
the line into social faux pas. He accidentally interrupted a sermon at the funeral when his
phone began to ring. As he struggled to silence the phone, people turned to stare at him. He
frustratedly burst, “Goddammit!” to the mortified shock of attendees. The song “Poison Mind”
describes this incident.
The single, “Bog Dog in the Breezeway” is a slow-burning psych jam. It describes a scenario
where two people on different kinds of drugs are unable to connect. It doubles as a metaphor
for people who view the world in different ways. The inspiration came when Thomas received
a cryptic message at work, “Do Not Enter Breezeway. Bog Dog!” He understood this was a
typo, but laughed and thought, “Bog dog in the breezeway? Are there mermen on the
mezzanine?”
Not long after the inception of Rogue Satellites, the Forest Arms apartment building, a Detroit
landmark, caught fire and was condemned for at least a decade. The band had been
scheduled to perform at a venue inside the building the day after it burned. It’s eventual
reopening sparked a sense of renaissance. “Your Forest Arms” is an examination of the
positives and the negatives of life in Detroit that pulls no punches.
Sonically and thematically, the album picks up where the last album left off. Opening with the
synth-heavy rocker, “Black Wings”, which was distilled from the interlude that closed 2015’s
Bees and Snakes. The record ends with the ambling meditation, “Voices”. Poszywak (vocals,
synth, bass) poses a simple question: “What are the voices you hear late at night in your
mind?”
Black Wings is slated for a July 13th 2018 release. The album will be available on vinyl
(Space Camp Records, Detroit) and cassette (Midwest Action, Chicago), in addition to being
available on digital platforms (iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc.)
